The first day of daycare my daughter refused to lie on the cot and spent the nap time in the manager's office because she was causing a disturbance. Oh boy. However, the next day when I went to pick her up, the teacher proudly showed me a photo of my daughter napping peacefully on the cot. They had managed to do, in two days, what I had been trying to do for 18 months. So, of course I had to know their secret.
- Routine. The daycare had their nap immediately after lunch. Doing this the exact same way, every day, allowed my daughter to know it was nap time and what was expected.
- Sending a stuffy. My daughter was never attached to any kind of stuffy or blankie. We picked out one from her toys together and sent it with her to sleep with. It was comforting to her and again became part of her nap time routine.
- The daycare shared that the teacher had sat beside my daughter's cot, and cradled her until she fell asleep. The next day she was able to just sit beside her with a hand on her back. The day after that, she fell asleep all on her own.
- And that's it!
